Coverage and Cost
Most people in California can get PrEP and PEP at little or no cost. Whether you have insurance or not, help is available. Our team can help you find the best option for your situation.
If You Have Insurance or Medi-Cal
Most private insurance plans, Medi-Cal, and Medicare cover PrEP and PEP.
In some cases, you may still have a copay at the pharmacy. If that happens, we can help you find copay assistance so you pay little or nothing out of pocket.
If You Are Uninsured or Coverage Is Limited
You can still get PrEP and PEP at low or no cost. Options may include:
Manufacturer assistance programs that help cover medication costs
California PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP AP), a state program that helps pay for PrEP-related costs when insurance does not cover everything
Our team can help you understand which option fits your needs.
California PrEP Assistance Program (PrEP AP)
PrEP AP is a California program that helps eligible people pay for PrEP care.
How enrollment works:
You meet with an enrollment worker, in person or by phone
You complete a short application
You provide basic documents, such as proof of identity and California residency
You confirm a negative HIV test
In some cases, Immediate Access is available, providing up to 1 month of PrEP while full enrollment is completed.
Privacy and Confidential Care
If you have insurance through a parent, spouse, or partner and have privacy concerns, you may still qualify for PrEP AP through a confidential care option.
Tell the pharmacy team or navigator if privacy is a concern. We can help you explore safe and confidential ways to get care.
Need Help With Coverage or Costs?
You don’t have to figure this out on your own. A community health worker or pharmacy team member can help you understand your options and get started.
